WINTER ENSEMBLE

The Michigan Winter Ensemble is a competitive color guard performance group at the University of Michigan.

  • AUDITION

    Auditions occur in late November/early December

    • Open to all U-M students (Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint)

    • Enrollment is required in the Winter Term (ENS 348.003)

  • Time Commitment

    • Practices are 2–3 hours on Tuesday nights and 5 hours on Sundays

    • There are 6–8 performances during the season, including Friends and Family shows, competitions around the state, and the MCGC State Finals in Saginaw

FAQ

  • No, MWE competes in MCGC (Michigan Color Guard Circuit) in the collegiate class. However, we usually will compete in one WGI Regional each season.

  • Nope! Any student from U-M Ann Arbor, Flint, or Dearborn is welcome to join us!

  • Roughly 7-8 hours per week. This is dependent on our competition schedule for the season.

  • It depends on the season, but we always talk about it at the beginning of the season. Most of the cost is directly charged to your student account for easy payment and potential scholarship use.

  • Nope! Just like in the MFlags, we teach everyone the basics they need to spin with us.

  • We start official practices in January after winter break. However, we have non-mandatory rehearsals that begin in October. While these rehearsals are optional, they will provide a leg-up during both the audition and staging processes. Contact our instructor, Joan, for more information!

  • Yes, we host auditions in late November/early December.

  • Yes. We do auditions for rifle around the same time as auditions for the ensemble. Sabre is not present in every MWE show. The use of sabre is dependent on the show theme for the year.
