ATHLETIC BANDS

Students attending all U-M campuses (Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint) are welcome to audition for any of the athletic bands. Students do not have to be a member of the Michigan Marching Band to audition for Basketball and Hockey Band. Please see below for information and audition specifics for each of the athletic bands.

BASKETBALL BAND

  • INFORMATION

    • Placement by audition

    • Open to all U-M students

    • Enrollment is required in the Winter Term (ENS 348.001)

    • Rehearsals – Tuesday (Fall 7:00–8:15 PM / Winter 6:30–7:45 PM) in Revelli Hall

    • Performances at all U-M home games

    • Possible Big Ten conference and NCAA tournament travel

    • All basketball band auditionees must be available for post-season basketball band travel (please check the B1G & NCAA websites for the most updated post-season scheduling information).

    • All basketball band auditionees must be available to travel with the basketball band during spring break if games are scheduled.

  • INSTRUMENTATION

    The instrumentation of the Basketball Band is as follows:

    • Piccolo

    • Clarinet

    • Alto Saxophone

    • Tenor Saxophone

    • Trumpet

    • Horn

    • Trombone

    • Bass Trombone

    • Euphonium

    • Tuba

    • Electric Bass

    • Drum Set

  • AUDITION FOR BASKETBALL BAND

    ALL auditionees must apply/audition at the beginning of the fall semester. Apply using the form linked below. Current MMB members may use their MMB Chair Audition for their ensemble audition.

    WINDS
    Students auditioning for basketball band without an MMB Chair Audition must submit a video of a two-minute excerpt of any piece of your choice and a full-range chromatic scale. Please make sure that your videos have the appropriate privacy settings so they may be accessed by the directors.

    DRUM SET
    Please submit a video performing 30 secs of the following styles - driving rock, swing, Latin, and your rendition of accompanying The Victors (trio). Contact Dr. Frey (rsfrey@umich.edu) if you need access to a drum set.

    ELECTRIC BASS
    Please submit a video of a two-minute excerpt of any piece of your choice.

HOCKEY BAND

    • Performances at all U-M home games

    • All hockey band auditionees must be available for post-season hockey band travel (please check the B1G & NCAA websites for the most up-to-date post-season scheduling information).

    • All hockey band auditionees must be available to travel with the hockey band during spring break if games are scheduled.

    • Full Battery Percussion (MMB Drumline students only)

  • AUDITION FOR HOCKEY BAND

    • Takes place during the fall semester only, no course enrollment is required

    • Rehearsals – Mondays (Fall 7:00–8:15 PM) in Revelli Hall

    • Trumpet

    • Horn

    • Trombone

    • Bass Trombone
